“…I Know There Just Gotta Be A Better World Somewhere.” B.B. King

Over the last several months, I’ve read multiple threads that noted the explosion in the number of SEO job listings. In these postings, people speculated whether this meant Corporate America was finally recognizing that Search Engine Marketing (SEM) has become an essential core competency that needed to be brought “in-house”. I’ve also read a very funny article about the SEO hiring process from the employer’s perspective. However, I have yet to see any experienced SEO/SEM veteran write openly about their experiences looking for a new position. So, I figure that I have an opportunity to write one of the few SEO articles that has yet to be written:.)

My former company embarked on a new strategic direction and I made the decision not to continue with them. I had talked to others in my “mostly local” search engine marketing network in Portland and did not see the right opportunity working with any of these folks. So, like any other person looking for something better, I updated my resume and started my job search.

My Background & Job Search Strategy

I have six years experience in SEO/SEM. I spent two years doing internet marketing in a corporate setting and two years in an agency setting. In addition, I have four years experience in affiliate marketing: 2 years full-time and 2 years as a “side gig” to my agency position. Also, I am a frequent contributor to Search Engine Guide.

I relied upon Indeed.com as my meta-job search engine. I set up the following search: http://www.indeed.com/jobs?q=search+engine+optimization+jobs&l=&radius

I sent my materials to any and all “advanced” SEO positions no matter where they were located. Each day, I received newly posted positions in my inbox and applied to those that met my criteria.

I had no intention of relocating from my Beaverton, Oregon home, but I figured that SEO/SEM could easily be performed from my home office and that forward-thinking employers would get that. I also created a “jazzy & memorable” email address just for my job search and used the following (hopefully catchy) subject line in each of my emails: Successful SEO Seeks Superior Situation. Every potential employer got the same cover letter & resume…I felt that if anyone didn’t obviously grasp what I could offer them as an employee, I shouldn’t be working there anyway.

The Results

I thought I wouldn’t have a problem getting prospective employers interested in my services. I did not foresee the utter onslaught of interest that my resume generated.

I got phone calls and emails:

From agencies, corporations & executive search firms.
From far away places like Cleveland, Memphis and Greensboro.
From much bigger locations like Washington DC, New York City and Los Angeles where one would think local SEM talent would be more readily available.
Many inquiries from Seattle, though very few from Portland.
At night and during the weekend. Even on Memorial Day, I received 3 employer contacts.
Unofficially, I was contacted by 20% of the people to whom I sent my resume and approximately 98% of my resumes were sent outside Portland. Roughly 20% of the non-local employers were open to a telecommuting arrangement.

Compensation

When people asked for my compensation requirements, I gave them an aggressive number. Almost nobody blinked.

What Can Be Learned From My Job Search Experience

If you are still a student: LEARN SEM!!! The demand for experienced SEM folks is incredibly intense. While the field is constantly evolving, anybody who can keep up and continually demonstrate tangible results will have guaranteed long-term employment. Plus, monetizing your own websites through affiliate marketing & contextual advertising can make your life as a student much more comfortable.

A business or law degree will take 6-7 years of education and could give you six figures of debt. 6-7 years of SEM experience could equate to six figure compensation. What makes more sense?

If you are a beginning to intermediate level search professional: LOSE YOUR ANONYMITY. My former boss gave me the suggestion that I should write SEM articles. I wrote one, submitted it several places, and got it picked up by Search Engine Guide which has continued to publish me. Writing articles (or blogging or forum posting) is an excellent way to establish your professional credibility. Last time I was in contact with Jennifer, she was looking for more writers…

If you run an agency that employs search professionals: It’s quite OK to offer entry level wages to search newbies. However, once your employees have proven their mettle, you must act proactively with their compensation. For any of your people willing to make a move, Corporate America will offer them enough money to leave your company.

If you are a corporation searching for a search professional: Be prepared to offer a non-standard employment arrangement. The SEM field attracts a lot of maverick personalities and many SEM’s would never consider “going corporate” because they learned search in an effort to escape a traditional working arrangement.

From talking to prospective corporate employers, I got the feeling that NOBODY answering their ads had my qualifications. So, I still was amazed that so many people were not open to a telecommuting arrangement (and I let everyone know that I was ready and willing to travel as needed).

If you are a corporate hiring manager, you should know that most experienced SEM’s will perceive your position to be unstable for many different reasons. Will the SEM suggestions be acted upon? Will important people in the organization “buy-in” to the internet marketing efforts? Will the company understand the SEM process and have the necessary patience and budget to implement an effective search strategy?

Therefore, you aren’t likely to get somebody to sell their house and move their family just to work for you…especially when any experienced candidate has many other opportunities to choose from. So, you really need to think non-traditionally in order to reel in an experienced employee.

If you are a well-networked search professional: Consider getting into SEM Executive Search Placement. A typical executive search fee is ¼ to 1/3 of the placed candidate’s first year compensation…even if you are making Shoe-like money in search, these are substantial checks.

An executive search professional that is also experienced in SEO/SEM has a massive competitive advantage in the marketplace because people without such insider knowledge aren’t really qualified to evaluate somebody’s SEO/SEM competency.

When I talked to recruiters, they tended to ask me reasonably superficial questions about search engine rankings and ROI. A “search pretender” with a little bit of knowledge and a lot of guile could have easily duped these folks.

However, if an upper echelon search professional such as Graywolf, Stuntdubl or Aaron Wall were to chat for 10 minutes with an SEM job candidate, they could evaluate the prospective employee’s search competency with a degree of precision that a non-search professional is incapable of doing. I believe that forward-thinking corporations would pay a premium for a SEO/SEM professional to find them a qualified employee. If this same person is also well-networked within the search community, they could make very large fees from just introducing someone from their SEM network to a prospective employer.

Conclusion

Where did I end up? With the company where I first learned SEO…a real estate development / residential & commercial construction executive search / recruiting firm headquartered in Fairfax, Virginia. I had many opportunities to choose from but the stability of the company and the ability to work with people I had known and liked from my home office outweighed all the other opportunities I received. I also thank God that I am part of an industry that is exciting, dynamic and allows me to support my family quite well.

META tag optimization is one of the primary processes involved in search engine optimization of your website. This article will help you understand what are META tags and how they can be optimized to improve the ranking of your website in search results.

What are META tags?
META tags are a part of the HTML coding of your page. They contain some information about your webpage helping the search engine to understand your webpage. In your HTML web page coding the 2 important HTML tags are title tag and description tag. Title tag as the name suggests, contains the title of your web page. Similarly, the description tag contains a short description of the content on your web page. The viewer can of course only see the title of your web page in their browsers. From search engine optimization point of view the most valuable feature they offer to you as a web site owner is the ability to showcase the correct description of your webpage to search engines and thereby it’s users.
There are other types of META tags than the description tag also, but from search engine optimization point of view you need to read more only about the description META tag and the title tag as mentioned earlier. Other META tags are primarily meant for private communication with the browsers and search engines. Other META tags, for example, can tell a browser what “character set” to use or whether a web page has self-rated itself in terms of adult content. For e.g. Robots META tag is used to prevent your web page from being indexed at all. Now lets know the title and description META tags a little more to understand their impact and how they can be of help for search engine optimization of your website.

The Title Tag
The HTML title tag isn’t a META tag, but it’s worth discussing it with the description META tag since it is more crucial for search engine optimization of your website. Whatever text you place in the title tag is crucial for search engines. This text determines how a search engine may decide to rank your page. All major crawlers use this text in your title tag as title of your page in your listings. So it is important that you embed the right keywords in your title keeping it crisp and clear at the same time. For e.g. if you are in the business of selling cars the title tag of the page on which one can see all the details a particular model should not just have the model name but should also have the right keyword(s) related to car sales.

The META Description Tag
The META description tag is a tool you can use to influence the description of your page in the crawlers that support the tag. While writing the description one needs to be careful to include all the right primary and secondary keywords and also be cautious about not repeating the keywords else you may end up getting your page ignored by crawlers as spam. The description generally 200 to 250 characters long, may be indexed by search engines, but only a smaller portion of this may be displayed. Not all search engines use the description provided in the description tag. For e.g. Google ignores the META description tag and instead automatically generates its own description for your web page. Still it is important for other reasons like; this is what the web directories display as your page description in their search results. Since this is what will be displayed to the viewer, ensure that it makes sense as a reader. Do not simply list keywords here. Also another point to be noted is that the keywords mentioned in your description should be present in the content on that page else having the keyword in the description tag does not help you in your search engine optimization exercise.
All in all one can conclude saying that both the title tag as well as the description tag need to be well written keeping in mind the right primary and secondary keywords.

A Brief Discussion On Reciprocal Links

One of the most vital part of the link building in Search Engine Optimization is the reciprocal link building. To promote the growth in the ranking of the website this is one of the most important things that you need to do. It is somewhat like an agreement that one website would post the link of another website while the other would do the same in return. It is a kind of text or banner link to a site in which both the sites have similar link to each other. It is a kind of agreement based on trust, as the webmasters doesn’t have much time to monitor whether the other site is maintaining the link on their site.

The fact is that too much of reciprocal links doesn’t always work better. Sometimes it is seen that some of the sites have hundreds of banner or text links on a single page and on visiting the linked paged you would find the same scenario. This is most unlikely to have such links, as such a thing can’t always bring more traffic. And therefore it is not a good idea to have lots of reciprocal links. Rather if you try to build up a few such relevant links, that would be a far better thing to do.

Moreover you should always know which site to link to. It is not likely that you go on linking to each and every site that is willing to link with you. Relevancy is the most important thing that is to be kept in mind and you should only link to the handful of most relevant sites. And if you choose sites relevant to the subject of your site, you can better maintain the interest level of your visitors in the topic they have gone through in your site.

However, you should avoid linking with those sites that are having blocked recips. In this case there are some sites who block the back links from the search engine spiders. Perhaps they want to show their sites to be having one-way links, or perhaps they want their site to appear to have fewer outbound links. This is not much a helpful thing for your site.

Moreover it is strongly recommended that reciprocal link building should be the part of the link building strategy not the sole concern of your marketing strategy. However most of the leading search engines check for the quality and the relevancy of the links that you are having. Therefore keep an eye on the relevancy of the sites that you are linking to. You should also often visit their links pages and examine them. Though it sometimes seem to be frustrating and time consuming to find out sites for link building but be sure that you efforts would not be in vain if you are in the right path gather better quality and relevant back links.

In order to get more relevant reciprocal links you can search in Google for link exchange websites which publish directories of website owners who exchange links with each other. But always be careful not to get involved in link firms which link to totally unrelated websites.

Reciprocal linking…does it work? Yes it does. One can debate the value of reciprocal linking compared to other linking strategies. And without a doubt, one way links far outway the value of a reciprocal link. However, if done correctly, reciprocal linking can be a powerful SEO strategy for your website (See Search Engine Optimization Specialist for additional tips).

Tip #1

Search for reciprocal links from pages that have a Google PR equal or greater to your own. By doing so, you are enhancing the quality/value of the reciprocal link improving your overall success in the eyes of the search engines – especially Google. The higher the Google PR the more valuable the link becomes.

Tip #2

Exchange links only with sites that are related to your site/industry in some way. For example, don’t link to web sites about athletic clothing if you’re selling hardware. Sites that you’re exchaning links with need to be contextually relevant. When they are, you earn extra points in the eyes of Google and other major search engines.

Tip #3

Make sure that your anchor text, the text that comprises your link contains your keywords. This is one of the most important aspects of linking. For example, a link to my primary site should look like this: “Internet Marketing Expert Marketing Secrets” instead of “http://www.marketingscoop.com”. Doing so will signal the search engines with the specific keywords that you’re optimizing for. This enhances your search results when someone searches on your keywords or keyword phrase.

Tip #4

Your links page should never include more than one hundred links. Keeping your link quantity below one hundred ensures that search engines do not discredit the value of your site or challenge it as SPAM. One way to include more than one hundred links to to create a mini-link directory. Develop categories and group your links appropriately.

Tip #5

Check your partner’s websites on a regular basis to ensure that they are still linking back to you. Often I’ve exchanged links with a site only to find that they removed the link back to my site only days after the exchange. You can do this manually or utilize software to do it for you. There are a variety of options out there. No matter how you validate reciprocal links, check them on a regular basis.

Tip #6

View the title of the links page where your link will be placed. You can do this by visiting the link page and then pressing “view” on your browser menu bar. Then select “view source code” and find the meta tags. The title tag should include keywords relevant to your site. It doesn’t have to, but if it does, the more valuable it becomes.

Tip #7

Quality over quantity. When you being the process of building reciprocal links for your website, go for quality over quantity. Once you get started, you will undoubtedly have numerous sites looking for an exchange. If the sites don’t meet your linking criteria, you must say no to the link exchange.

In summary, make sure your reciprocal link program includes relevant links that have an equal or greater Google PR. Check your links often and make sure not to include more than 100 links on your link exchange page. Follow these tips and you’re well on your way to a successful reciprocal linking campaign. Lastly, be patient. The value of reciprocal links is most clearly seen over time.

Reciprocal links exchange isn’t new to the online market. I remember doing links exchange in late 90s and since that time reciprocals have helped me a lot. But why some are getting top positions on search terms with reciprocal links, and others fall behind? Where is the line that separates winners and those who blame everything on the changing nature of search engines?

Sharing personal experience I can say that reciprocal links are one of the great inventions of the Internet. Links save tons of job for search engines. Imagine how much information search engines would need to index! They already pay much on all their huge databases, and indexing everything on site could double, triple their expenses on storing and processing all that info.

It is much easier for search engines to index a link only. Because links have title (or anchor) and this title can be analyzed for keyword to check the relevancy. Link has structure and keywords even in the name of link; link has a description. From links search engines can learn about the topic, the popularity of your web site and help to put your site to the proper niche in the eyes of search engines.

Now you see why search engines are destined to love links, reciprocal links including, and why link exchange remains a very important factor to get higher positions and receive free, targeted traffic from search engines.

Reciprocal Links – Play by The Rules of SEs.

Most of the problems with reciprocals emerge when site owners or webmasters start violating the rules of search engines. Let’s face it: if you want to get free, targeted traffic from search engines, you either play by their rules, or try to find traffic somewhere else.

The rules of search engines are very simple.

(1) Your web site must give value.

Don’t make a dummy site with pure directory, and Google listings, and maybe Google ads. This type of site gives no value: no useful info, no quality product or service – nothing. When the user of search engine finds such a web site on the search term, this can irritate greatly. Users report to search engine, human editor comes to the site, sees its ‘value’ and the site gets to black list.

I had a client who had some problems with IP being blocked by Google. When I came to his site – Oh my God – seems like everything that could be violated was violated. It is good that Google gets every site the chance to get back on board, if the violations are taken out.

(2) Reciprocal links exchange must be relevant.

If some years ago engines wouldn’t go that far in indexing the relevancy of links, today the picture looks absolutely another way. It is easy to index the link and check if the description and title of link coincide with the topic and niche of web site.

Of course, as the owner of web site you have all rights to put any kind of links on your web site – it is your business. But since you want to rank top from reciprocal links exchange with search engines, forget about your ambitions. Pick only relevant web sites and do link exchange with them.

(3) Exchange reciprocal links with reputable web sites.

The hidden truth is that for Google it does not matter what Page Rank the page with your reciprocal link has. Or better say – even PR 0 links count. The more relevant links, the better for your site.

But surely having your reciprocal link on 5 pages with (for example) PR 6 helps you to get indexed very fast, without sandbox for 2+ months and other unnecessary pain.

That is why never lose a chance to do reciprocal links exchange with a page that has nice Google PR, this will add more value to your web site in the eyes of Google. And Google is still the top search engine.

A hint where you can find many web sites that are ready for link exchange and have pages with nice PR. Check the sites that have automatic reciprocal links exchange directories installed. Most of the pages in these directories have PR from 3 to 7. And it is so easy to automatically submit your reciprocal link to all of them.

Follow these guidelines and learn more from those who already succeeded. Be wise and reasonable with reciprocal links exchange, and this will give you tremendous fruits in the end.

Search Engine Optimization – Secrets Revealed.

Let’s begin: What is ‘competition’?
Competition is described as “one that competes”, “a rival”, “selling or buying goods or sevices in the same market as another”, and even down to the biological level – “an organism that lives in competition with another”.

SEO & Web – Competitive Landscape.

Increasingly, web surfers are using search engines to find companies, services and goods. Big and smaller companies, are using search engine optimization and search engine marketing techniques to beat their competitors. On the Internet, we are dealing with virtual entities – and we all compete in increasingly tougher and user-aware market places. Search Engine Optimization and Search Engine Marketing focuses on building traffic and allowing you to leverage your websites, services and products. Through competitive research, optimal keyword strategies, quality content, link-back neighborhoods and educating yourself on Search Engine Optimization (SEO) and Search Engine Marketing (SEM), you should be well positioned to beat the competition — over time.

What options exist for creating revenue online?

A) Search Engine Optimization and Search Engine Marketing are two fantastic ways in which you can get visibility on the Internet. Additionally, you can and should include email marketing strategies, with a complete CRM and backoffice process. You can increase visibility and competitive edge hundred-fold. Great content with an intelligent link strategy is vital.

B) Affiliate Marketing Programs. Join and promote these (Mr. Jeff Bezos at Amazon is famous for this). Create one for your company – with potentially exciting and lucrative results. (The merchants, or you – offer affiliates commissions for sales activity generated by the affiliate’s web sites).

Create edge and stay competitive with SEO and SEM.

You must have a service or product niche – to create success on the Internet using these ‘silent money making engines’. You need to understand that niche marketplaces is how you get there, along with sound search engine optimization and search engine marketing principles, quality content, backlinks and CRM sales backend processes.

Optimization Tip #1: On and off page optimization, what is that, and why is it important?

First of all you need to create a web site that is a related to a niche marketplace. (You already know who your customer is, right!?) It is very important that you do your keyword research first. In fact, competitive research as an action step is missed by over 98% of the online marketplace. There are many great keyword tools and many are free. Keep in mind that Google ‘owns’ over 50% of the search marketplace. (Yahoo receives about 30% and MSN about 20%). Google is a very important search engine for you to focus on, and I suggest you start with it (even though MSN and Yahoo are great resources – especially the newly launched MSN Adcenter).

Competitive SEO Research:

Try the following on yahoo and google (make sure syntax is correct): site: [http://www.competitor.com]. (replace ‘competitor’ with real name). It will show you how many pages that each search engine has indexed from the competitor’s site. Depending on the site, many results could be returned. Look to see if each page has a title and description associated with them. You will then be able to determine whether each page within your competitor site has been individually optimized.

When you start researching keywords do not start with the most common keyword. For example, if you are selling Canon products, do no start researching or optimizing for the word ‘Canon’. You need to break it down – for example – to ‘Canon power shot’. Even better -’Canon power shot SD400 memory sticks’. This way, you have created a niche keyword structure (many permutations from these keywords) within a larger category, and you will able to better optimize keywords for this area. With this in mind, go to Google and start typing in specific keywords and phrases to see where the competition is. As you are doing this, you should understand the page rank algorithm. It is Google’s way of giving specific value to how popular are popular your web site is. It’s essentially based on the number of votes of other web sites that have cast votes up for your web site. Votes are generated when another web site places a link on their web site that is pointing to your web site. The more votes you get, the better your chances are for good ranking. Try our free SEO tools and give yourself a kick-start.

To view the page rank, install the Google toolbar (toolbar.google.com). As you look at the competition, recognize that we talk about on-page and off- page optimization. On-page optimization are things like proper use of H1 header tags, using main keywords in the title tags, keywords and phrases are bolded underlined or italicized, using image tags and placing correct keywords within that tag. Many place keywords at the very beginning of the text, and once at the very end of the copy, with other sprinkled throughout the company. It’s an “hour glass” type of a concept. Keywords at the top, less in the middle and again repeated at the end. Do the things that the competition is doing just do it a little bit better – this is one way to get one step ahead of them. The “least imperfect” site wins.

Optimization Tip #2: How does Tagging really work, and why does it matter?

In our example, when we open the Canon landing page you need to start with the page title for your web site. The page title should only include the main keywords. (Do not ever say welcome to our web site!) Try to combine the keywords in your title. Make sure you use the H1 header tag early in your body text. Also, when Google reads the web page it uses the text from the top left-hand side of the page to the bottom right hand side of the page.

Next, you would need to create H2 header tags. You can think of that as the sub heading for a web page. This is a very common used tag, so it’s best to place the primary keyword in your H1 tags and your secondary keywords into your H2 tags.

Now you need to actually create the content for the page. When you try to write the contents, sprinkle your main keywords throughout the copy. But don’t overdo it, just make it a natural effort. Once you have written the copy you should then go back and bold underline or italicize some of the keywords. Only one time each, maximum. There are many HTML site building tools out there that use the Bold (B) tag for bolding keywords, and has been overused. Google doesn’t penalize you for it, but in fact, by using the tag STRONG it provides higher quality content for search engines. You can also add some images for your users, and when you do this you need to properly include the keyworded image tags. So for example, if we have an image on our web page called ‘oneshot.jpg’ you would include code that adds that ALT tag and text about that specific memory stick (from our Sony example).

Also, Google views your web page from top left to bottom right. Well, in general they do. However, you want to make sure that you code your HTML to compliment or support this, specially if you have non-related navigational elements to the left of page. There are techniques to do this, which is explained in a great series, try the Free SEO 3-day Email Course.

Optimization Tip #3: Off page search engine optimization – competition to the ground!

You have come up with your niche marketplace and associated keywords and phrases into your page. You will have completed proper approach to tagging from titles through the body content, including H1′s, H2′s and ALT tags. You are then ready to get your site indexed. Your first rule, is to never use the Google submission form. There are better and faster ways.

The first approach

You need to know how a search engine finds you in the first place. They will visit one web site that is already in their index and if they follow the link to that new site, it could be yours. For example, if you have a new site and you have a partner in this ‘Canon’ business space, and he puts a link to your page and he’s already visible on the Internet at Google, they’ll crawl to that site and find your link and get you into the index. Now what if you don’t have a partner in this space in your are brand new, you still can get into the index. There are article directories that you can submit to, places like PRWeb.com. Others are – goarticles.com, buzz article.com, article fever.com and many more. These are excellent sites for you to write something about your services or products. The engines will pick you out, and Google will find you.

The second approach (and to quickly get listed in the Google index)

Go see your competition. Type in the search terms you are competing with and find web sites that have a page rank of five or six or higher that you will notice in the green bar from the Google toolbar (above). Find six or 10 of these sites and locate their contact information. We have found that e-mail works – of course – but picking up the phone and commenting on their site and how discussing how a link partnership could benefit each others, rates higher. Top ranking sites may ignore you, and it’s certainly tougher persuade somebody to add your link to their web sites. You must give them a good reason to do this. Contact sites that are related to you and are complimentary – those are the best. Find good and great link neighborhoods within your topics. And always think of a way that you can give them something that they would benefit from. Think of this as an emotional bank account. You make deposits, and you (later) may make withdrawals. If you can manage to get at least one PR 6 web site to link your web site, you’ll be off and running. You should be indexed in under three days. If you get a PR 7 web site link to you – in most cases you’ll be there in 24 hours.

The third approach (and why you must be careful here)

Purchase links from high Page Rank websites. The easiest and fastest way to do this is to visit one of the many link purchasing websites. Here are a few of the better ones: a) http://www.linkadage.com, b) c) http://www.textlinkbrokers.com, d) http://www.text-link-ads.com. (NOTE: Only buy one/month, or you may get seriously penalized). Many times you can purchase 1 PR7 link for a 1 month time period for, say, $150. After the month is up, there is no need to renew because you are already in Google’s index. Paying $150, and you can be indexed by Google quickly and with little to no work on your part.

Tip #1:

Add a Google sitemap (XML). You can easily do this with free tools or directly via a Google account. You should also check the competitor sites for [http://URLname/sitemap.xml]. It’s the default for Google, and if the competition has it (it will load in your browser or reader) – you can be assured they are pretty agressive and informed about Search Engine Optimization techniques.

Tip #2:

Discover how many pages the competition has online. You can use free tools again, and the Xenu’s Link Sleuth is free – and fast – a good tool to keep close. The ‘Stats for Managers’ at the bottom of page is the important data for statistics.

Tip #3:

Use the ‘link: sitename.com’ syntax in Google to locate number of backlinks within a competitor site. Google and Yahoo have different estimates here, but it’s vital information from both. (Yahoo use ‘linkdomain: sitename.com’).

Much is written on the blogs’ approach to SEO rankings. We believe it has its place, but in moderation and always pertinent to your business. Blog spamming can get you penalized as well. The Microsaw Web 2.0 blogs are here, and recently a new service was launched at PayPerPost, written up in Business Week.

Continue the search engine optimization and search engine marketing work, and expand your strategy to include email marketing, affiliate, on / off-page optimization, along with traditional means for online marketing (keyword) dominance (print/media). Always provide great content, but that alone will not do it. Off-page strategies are very important, but may work too well. For example, check out the top result on Google for the search term miserable failure. It is not in position one because that web page had been optimized for that search term. The web site is in position one because huge amounts of web sites link to it with the text miserable failure in the link text. Can you guess which site it is?
