Many organizations still see SEO Services as some type of dark art, however, SEO is actually quite straight forward, its just about making sure that your web content is correctly formatted to allow search engines to easily spider your site, making sure the your content is original and ensuring that you play within the rules laid out the terms of service of major search engines like Google, below is a list I prepared of the most common SEO blunders I come across. By avoiding the below practices you can ensure that your website has the potential to rank well in organic results.

Drop down Boxes Navigation.
quite a few older sites still use drop down form type boxes as their primary and only means of navigation, this causes problems for spiders trying to crawl your website, if you are going to use this type of navigation, then make sure that your website also has text links as a backup and also add a site map so that search engines have a list of the pages you want indexing to use as a guide.

Splash Pages.
One of the most awful things you can do to your website for SEO, not only that but studies show that internet users find splash pages needless and annoying, in fact a small percentage of users will actually leave your site as soon as the splash page shows. Imagine going to the supermarket and finding a big electric door with a button on it saying “welcome to the supermarket, push the button to enter” would you be impressed? Probably not, more likely it would just irritate the hell out of you! From the perspective of an SEO Services it is even worse, splash pages generally consist of images with very little to no textual content, this means that your domains most important page is useless and has no chance of ranking well for any competitive keywords.

Flash Navigation.
Another bad move SEO wise, whilst flash can look beautiful, it is for the best part unreadable to search engines, whilst it is correct that Google can now read some data from flash file, the days when I would vouch for flash as a websites primary and only form of navigation are still a long way off. If you have to use flash as a primary form of navigation, then make sure that you back it up with text links and an up to date site map.
Canonical Urls

Spammy Content.
Unnatural and spammy content does not go unobserved by todays search engines. Keyword stuffing is a bad practice that will harm your websites ability to rank well, if you have trouble fitting all your important keyword into a page whilst maintaining a natural feel to the content, then the best rule of thumb is to create a new page for additional keywords. Remember that you should compose content for human readers and not spiders.
