Frankly it cracks me up when I hear people asking whether they should be building backlinks or doing social media marketing.  

I know, I know!  The name of this site more or less guarantees that I will argue in favor of building backlinks.  So maybe you will be surprised when I say that social media marketing is at least as important if not more so than pure backlink building.

I draw a distinction here because really,  when you engage in social media marketing you really are also building backlinks so don't fool yourself that it is a completely different activity.

The problem with social media marketing has always been that the activities involved can take over your life with little or no results to show.  On the other hand, when it is done properly not much can compare with the results you get from social media.

There are programs coming out soon (watch here for more info) that will give you a specific gameplan that is both realistic and measurable in it's implementation.  

Now if you are going to be replacing your backlink building activities totally in favor of social media, just remember to be sure that you also use your content there to build backlinks at the same time.

See, you really don't have to stop if you just stay "backlink conscious" while you go about your social media marketing activities…
